GENERAL INFORMATION

The Institute of Mathematical Sciences, formed in 1998, started off as a Department of Mathematics in 1959 and was one of the pioneering departments in the Faculty of Science, University of Malaya. It is also an institute of study in the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Education, and services the Faculty of Engineering as well as the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology. The Institute is today one of the largest mathematical institutes in Malaysia. More details on the Institute can be found in the Institute's Prospectus.  

Our mission

In line with the University of Malaya’s mission to be a premier university, the Institute aims to

  • contribute to society by providing quality education and training in various areas of mathematics;
  • nurture talent in the mathematical sciences and to produce graduates with problem-solving abilities to meet the challenges of an ever-changing world;
  • strive for academic excellence via research and the dissemination of knowledge.

Facilities

The Institute is housed in a building of its own, close to the main University Library. A canteen, a bus-stop and two bank branches are located nearby.  There are two computer labs in the Institute equipped with

·          108 pc’s (with Pentium 4 processors)

·          7 pc’s (with Pentium 3 processors)

·          4 sun workstations

·          2 laser, 1 colour deskjet & 5 heavy-duty dot matrix printers

·          1 LCD projector & 1 visualiser

·          Full internet & e-mail facilities

Software available in the labs include

·          Matlab, Matcad

·          Minitab, S-Plus

·          Visual C++

·          PCTeX32

The Institute’s building also houses 4 lecture halls and 7 tutorial rooms.  A staff recreation room, a student reading room and office space reserved for the Mathematics Students Club are also available.
