Frequently Asked Questions (Undergraduates and Recent Graduates)

Q1:      I am an SEP student (enrolled in 2001) doing a minor in Mathematics. Is a C- in Calculus II (which is a compulsory paper) considered a pass? Will it be counted in my CGPA/CPA?

A1:       Students who enroll in or after the 2003/2004 academic session must obtain at least a C for the compulsory mathematics papers*. In your case (2001/2002 intake) and for students who have enrolled before the 2003/2004 academic session, the passing grade for Calculus II is at least a D. Please refer to the Buku Panduan Fakulti Sains of the year you enrolled (i.e., 2001/2002) and compare it, e.g. with Buku Panduan Fakulti Sains 2004/2005.

*For students who have enrolled in or after the 2003/2004 academic session, the passing grade for courses which are prerequisites for other courses in the Core Compulsory Courses section is at least a C. For example, Calculus 1, II and III are all listed as Core Compulsory Courses in all the programs offered by ISM (except for the Actuarial and Financial Mathematic program). Since Calculus I is a prerequisite for Calculus II and Calculus II a prerequisite for Calculus III, a student enrolled in the program must pass Calculus 1(Calculus II)  with at least a C to be able to do Calculus II (Calculus III). However, since Calculus III is not a prerequisite for any Core Compulsory Courses, the passing grade for Calculus III is at least a D.

Q2:      I am an SEP student (enrolled in 2003) doing a minor in Mathematics. I have taken Calculus 1 in Semester 2, 2003/2003 and only got a D. Can I still register for Calculus II in the coming semester?

A2:       Since you are enrolled before the 2003/2004 academic session, the passing grade for Calculus I is at least a D (Please refer to answer to Question 1) above. You may therefore register for Calculus II in the next semester.

Q3:        I am an ex-student from ISM. I need to get some information from 'Kelab Matematik ISM'. How can I contact them? Can I have the email address or contact number?

A3:       Kelab Matematik ISM has an office on the ground level of the Mathematics Building (Room 005). They do not have an email address or contact phone number at the moment but you may leave a message with Pejabat Am ISM (tel: 79674323) to get a representative from Kelab Matematik to contact you. Alternatively, you may want to write to

Q4:      My friend and I are recent graduates of the Industrial and Computational Mathematics program and the Statistics program offered by ISM. We understand from JPA that these degrees are not recognised. Can ISM clarify this?

A4:       The Management of UM is aware of this and have taken immediate steps to get the degrees recognised. Please be assured that the quality of our degrees have always been of utmost importance to us and we are positive that this matter will be favourably resolved soon.  You are advised to contact the Registrar of UM directly to get the updates on this matter.

Q5:      I am an SES student majoring in Statistics. I have taken the course CBEB1101 (Introduction to Business Management) which is compulsory for students majoring in S & T. Can the credits obtained from this course be included in my total credit hours?

A5:       The credits obtained from the course CBEB1101 and any other courses offered by faculties other than the Science Faculty are considered as credits obtained under the category of  Kursus Luar Fakulti”. As such the credit hours you obatained from CBEB1101 can be counted in your total credit hours.
